MP - The Hybrid City (MA)

The complexity in defining Brussels’ identity is the reason why I decided to develop a visual identity for the city. The identity issues that we come across in Belgium or Brussels are the same ones we encounter at a bigger scale: Europe. Indeed, Belgium or Europe are examples of nations where applying one identity based on a single vision would be a failure as they are made of an intricate mixture of different cultures

The aim of my project was to create a visual identity that would not only convey a strong image of Brussels but would also be very specific and unique to the city. Therefore I developed a flexible identity based on a generative system which principles and rules (such as hybridity, dualism and coexistence) are embedded in Brussels’ culture.

Design Literacy - Object (MA)

For this project we were given one of the three fundamental shapes (circle, square, triangle). I had to work with the circle. The first part of the project was about the investigation of our form, experimenting and playing with the circle without interfering with its meaning. As the circle is a very static shape, I tried to convey movement and dynamism through various form, eventually resulting in the composition featured on the poster.
Design Literacy - Context (MA)

The second part of the design literacy project consisted to attach a meaning to our form. Being influenced by the experimentation I did for the ’object’ part, I decided to investigate the air force roundel and I created an identity for a fictive European Air Force. During my research, I stumbled across various examples of flexible identities which triggered my interest towards generative systems. Europe is an international and complex institution, that is the reason why I created a flexible identity that would translate this diversity.
Pioneer Plaque (MA)

This is an outcome resulting from a three days ‘poster design’ workshop taught by Jonathan Barnbrook. For that elective we were asked to redesign and reinterpret the plaque of 'Pioneer one'(1970), the first human-built spacecraft (1) to leave our galaxy. The original idea of the plaque was that the Pioneer spacecraft should carry a message from humankind. While redesigning the plaque, I decided to send a message that would scare and repel extraterrestrial intelligence so that they would leave the human race alone. In order to carry that kind of message without referring to typography or language, I designed a pattern based on toxic animals' camouflage (2, 4) and dazzle ships (3, 5). And eventually, as a reference to the original Pioneer plaque, I projected the pattern on a body.
Glass, Rays & Ants (MA)

This project focuses on the page as a mediator and carrier of meaning with emphasis on how narrative and meaning can work across, between and within the page. The subject matter of this publication is a journey in the the ‘city district’ of London. This project explores how the page can create a time based medium, how narrative can unfold over a series of pages, but also how format & materials of printed pages can affect narrative.
The Courtauld Gallery

'Blood Tears Faith Doubt' is an exhibition that was Curated by the MA students of the Courtauld Institute’s Curating the Art Museum course. In collaboration with Edouard Pecher we created the identity of the show and all its related printed material.

What makes religious imagery powerful and enduring? How do historical and contemporary artworks engage the viewer in questions of belief? This exhibition explores these questions by confronting historical Christian art with contemporary art that continues to engage with the same visual language.
3 American Short Stories - Posters (PG)

The aim of this project is to reinvigorate the interest of young adults into literature. In order to entice my audience more efficiently I used the poster format. Indeed while reading the story and unfolding the poster, the reader’s expectations are increasing. Like unwrapping a Christmas present, the poster on the back-side will be the reward for having read the story. Once read and unfolded, the poster can be hung on the wall where it will advertise for itself and act as a constant reminder.
